In 2020, the Netherlands has massively adopted a puppy. With these so-called corona puppies, we also choose well-known names that have been high in the top 10 for years. Just like last year, Luna is the most popular name for a female and Max is the most popular name for a male. If we look at the total top 5 for all new puppies, there are few surprises, this consists of Luna, Max, Bobbie/Bobby, Bella and Pip. Remarkably enough, in places 6 to 10 are names that were not yet in the top 10 last year:Buddy, Charlie, Joep, Ollie and Nala. This is shown by research by Petplan, based on data from almost 9,000 pet owners.

Corona puppies
The enormous increase in the number of new registrations is of course related to the corona time. As early as March, Petplan investigated the increased interest in puppies. Then people indicated that the interest in a puppy was created or strengthened by the corona crisis. One of the main reasons for buying a dog was loneliness. It is not for nothing that the name Buddy is, after Max, the most popular name for a male this year.

Luna has dethroned the most popular name of 2019 this year:Max has dropped from 1 to 2. The numbers 3 to 5 have even remained completely the same as last year.
